NYCFC and LAFC battled each other Saturday night in Los Angeles, locked in to what seemed destined to end in a scoreless stalemate. That was until Ryan Hollingshead seized the moment in the 86th minute, delivering a dramatic game-winner.
New York controlled possession and dictated the tempo in the first half but struggled to turn that dominance into meaningful chances. Despite holding the ball well, they managed just three shots, none of which were on target. The match remained a defensive one, with neither side able to capitalize on brief lapses.

Then came the breakthrough. LAFC’s superstar Denis Bouanga ignited an attack late in the game. His pass into the box was deflected, then landed right at the feet of Hollingshead, who wasted no time rifling a shot past NYC goalkeeper Matt Freese.
New York had four minutes of stoppage time to respond but couldn’t mount a meaningful threat. LAFC’s defense held firm, sealing a second consecutive win to open the season.
Veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris secured his third straight shutout across all competitions, making LAFC the only MLS team yet to concede a goal in 2024.
NYCFC now turns its attention to a home clash with Orlando City. Meanwhile, LAFC shifts focus to a quick turnaround, facing Columbus on Tuesday in the Concacaf Champions Cup.
