Heading into Tuesday, there were questions about whether North Carolina deserved a spot in this year’s NCAA tournament. The Tar Heels wasted no time silencing the doubters, delivering a dominant performance in a 95-68 rout of San Diego State.

RJ Davis led the charge, pouring in 26 points while shooting a perfect 6-6 from beyond the arc. He was one of four UNC players to score in double figures as the team put on a shooting clinic. The Tar Heels knocked down a team tournament-record 14 three-pointers on 24 attempts (58.3%), just overwhelming for the Aztecs.

From the opening tip, North Carolina seized control. A 9-0 run early put SDSU on its heels early, and by halftime, the Tar Heels had built a commanding 47-23 lead. The margin was as large as 40 at one point as the Aztecs struggled to keep pace. San Diego State shot just 39% from the field and surrendered the most points they had allowed all season.

Nick Boyd and Wayne McKinney III led SDSU with 12 points each, but their efforts weren’t nearly enough to overcome UNC’s red-hot shooting.

With the victory, North Carolina now turns its attention to a Friday showdown against No. 6 Ole Miss, looking to carry this momentum forward.
