Spirit Open Regular Season with 2-1 Victory Over Houston Dash

The Washington Spirit showed no signs of a Challenge Cup hangover as they marched into Houston and secured a 2-1 victory over the Dash. With this win, the Spirit made a clear statement—they’re back and determined to get back to the NWSL Championship game after narrowly losing last season.

From the opening whistle, Washington dominated possession and put Houston’s defense under pressure. Their attack paid off in the 16th minute when Leicy Santos threaded a pass into the box. Ashley Hatch’s initial shot was denied by Houston’s goalkeeper Jane Campbell, but Makenna Morris was right there to redirect the rebound and slot it home. Coming off a stellar rookie campaign, Morris wasted no time proving she’s poised for another standout season.

The Spirit looked to double their lead in the 33rd minute when Chloe Ricketts unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box that rattled off the post. This time, it was Hatch who was in the right place at the right time, calmly finishing the rebound to put Washington ahead 2-0. The Spirit’s aggressive attack and high press kept Houston on their heels throughout the first half, preventing the Dash from generating any real threats.

Houston, however, refused to go down without a fight. In the 75th minute, Maggie Graham headed in a crucial goal, giving the Dash a chance to leave the match with points. With nine minutes of stoppage time added, Houston pushed forward desperately in search of an equalizer, but Washington’s defense held firm to secure all three points. Goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury made a crucial save in the dying moments, ensuring the Spirit’s road trip ended in triumph.

Next up, the Spirit will return home to Audi Field for their season opener, where they’ll face reigning MVP Temwa Chawinga and the Kansas City Current. Meanwhile, the Dash will hit the road to take on the Chicago Red Stars.
